Lipreading: The Skill That Changes Everything
If you've ever found yourself nodding along in a conversation you couldn't quite follow, or exhausted after a day of straining to hear, you'll know that hearing loss isn't just about sound. It's about the mental effort of piecing everything together — every single day.
Lipreading is one of the most powerful tools available to anyone with hearing loss. It won't replace what your ears can't do, but combined with whatever hearing you have, it can transform how you navigate the world — in shops, at appointments, with family, in noisy restaurants, and anywhere else that life takes you.
It's a learnable skill — not a gift
Many people assume lipreading is something you either can or can't do. The truth is, it's a skill, and like any skill, it improves with practice and the right guidance. Even modest improvement can make a significant difference to your confidence and your daily life.
That's exactly why we run our Managing Hearing Loss Course.
What the course covers
Across six practical Monday afternoon sessions, you'll be introduced to lipreading and fingerspelling, explore proven strategies for everyday communication, and pick up practical techniques you can start using immediately. Just as importantly, you'll be in a room with people who genuinely understand what you're going through — no explaining required.
One of our members puts it better than we ever could:
"Becoming increasingly hard of hearing, I have found it very comforting to meet others in the same situation. The lip reading classes are fun and I have received invaluable technical support re hearing aids. Thank you."
— GHOHSG Member
Sessions run on: 21 Sept · 5 & 19 Oct · 2, 16 & 30 Nov, 2:00–4:30 PM at the United Reformed Church, Portsmouth Road, Guildford GU2 4BS.
